2017 was the inaugural edition of Stetina’s Sierra Prospect, how did it make you feel?
The 2017 Prospect was the culmination of a dream for me. I think it was my happiest day on the bike. Ever.
You’ve got a lot in store for 2018, what are you most excited about?
The Summit Finish! We are finishing on top of the formidable Mt. Rose! Just like the #QueenStage of any race and because I’m a climbing specialist (and this is my ride after all).
On top, Prospectors can enjoy heartier fare, and shuttles will transport you and your bike back to Northstar, where tacos and beer await. Or join Gary Erickson (of Clif Bar) and myself, for a social ride back to Northstar and the after party. We are taking a hidden road, and there will be a secret Clif Segment en-route, but you gotta ride with us to find it…
Any other route changes?
We’ve created a new Express route! No longer the little brother of the Intrepid, Express riders will conquer Mt. Rose from the (slightly shorter, but more picturesque) Tahoe side. It may only be half the Intrepid, but I promise this will still require mental fortitude and a hunger to conquer the Sierras. You better not underestimate the Express.
What about the timed segments?
The segment timing and classification system was the perfect fit of competition and camaraderie last year. We’ll continue with the Road Rally Segment timing format. We are getting rid of Brockway though, no need to burn the lungs at 8:00 am. Now riders can limber up on the first climb and get ready to crack the whip at Sand Harbor.
The High Fives Gala Dinner was a talking point last year, is it happening again in 2018?
The High Fives Fundraiser dinner on Saturday night was arguably one of the most enjoyable parts of 2017 edition. This year we’re upping the ante with a sunset ride on the Gondola to the top of Northstar for a rustic evening in the Zephyr Lodge. It’s gonna be a very special night again!
See you in September, on an expedition for cycling's true gold.
